Annie Harrison
“Impressions of Sligo”, is, as described by the artist, a series of abstract paintings. “The end-work was inspired by the rugged beauty of the Sligo/Leitrim landscape. And the beginning? Annie admits to a fascination with the idea of the horizon line as a compositional division within the context of a painting. “It’s the idea that you draw a horizontal line across a canvas and suddenly a sort of barren vista opens within the picture plane,” Annie explains. “These paintings started out as abstract works - much less about the landscape per se and more about the paint and mark-making. As the layers developed, other features emerged and were allowed to stay – this time!” She remains adamant, however, that the work still does what it initially said “on the tin” with the description of “abstract” paintings transmuted to “semi-abstract” for this term. “They were never meant to be representational, merely impressions”. Annie would like to acknowledge Sligo Arts Department who contributed towards funding for the show.
