Michael Budd served his apprenticeship with a Blacksmith here in his home County of Sligo. This gave him a good understanding and knowledge of the skills and techniques in the craft. Michael now works on his own designing and crating both contemporary and traditional ironwork. His work includes: signs, fire tools, fire grates, gates and railings, candlesticks, tools and sculpture. The attraction of smiting to him is “in the creating of something both functional & beautiful”.

“Working with hot metals means speed is a crucial skill this sometimes leads to a piece being designed as your working, but as an old blacksmith once told me ‘Anyone can do a thing once. It takes a craftsman to be able to recreate it’. I have found this good advice for an Artist Blacksmith”.

I see my work moving more in to sculpture but my love of industrial design will most likely keep a good proportion of my work as practical items”.

Michael’s work can be viewed in Church Street Gallery, Sligo, and people are always welcome to come and have a look around the forge where he always has a few pieces of my work just finished or still being worked on. Commissions also welcome.
