The Yeatsian Legacy:
Talks Series 2010 at IT Sligo
Understanding Cultural Difference
KATERINA GREGOS
Curating in Contested Territories: Case Study - Cyprus
Friday 26 February, 2010. 2pm
IT Sligo, Room A0004 (opposite main reception). Free Admission.
Katerina Gregos will present a groundbreaking project that she co-curated in 2005 entitled ‘Leaps of Faith: An International Arts Project for Green Line and the City of Nicosia’. This was the first international arts project of its kind to take place inside the UN-controlled dead zone, and on both sides of the divided city.
30 artists were commissioned to make new work in relation to the situation in Cyprus, not only political, but also social, cultural etc. 25 parallel projects were also instigated with local artists. The project was based on generating mutual understanding and overcoming ideas of cultural difference, by providing a view of the "other side".
Katerina Gregos is a curator and writer based in Brussels, and founder/director of The People's Cinema. Previously she was the artistic director of Argos - Centre for Art & Media, Brussels and director of the Deste Foundation, Athens. She has organised numerous exhibitions internationally including, most recently, Contour - the 4th Biennial of Moving Image in Mechelen, Belgium entitled "Hidden in Remembrance is the Silent Memory of Our Future". As an independent curator she has also organised numerous exhibitions including: E V+ A 2006, Limerick, Ireland, "Leaps of Faith: An International Art Project for the Green Line and the City of Nicosia", Cyprus, and "Channel Zero", for the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Amsterdam. Katerina Gregos regularly publishes on art and artists in magazines, books and exhibition catalogues. She is also a visiting lecturer at HISK, the Higher Institute for Fine Arts, Antwerp and La Cambre, School of Fine Arts, Brussels.
