Sligo Cellist plays Haydn Concerto
30/01/2010 - 30/01/2010
Sligo Baroque Orchestra - The Methodist Church, Wine Street, Sligo
The Haydn concerto will be the focal point in an orchestral concert in Sligo on Saturday 30th January
Haydn’s C major Cello concerto has become one of the standard works in the orchestral repertoire, but for nearly two hundred years it was thought to be lost. Rediscovered in Prague in 1962 it very rapidly became a much loved, much-played piece of classical music.
The Haydn concerto will be the focal point in an orchestral concert in Sligo on Saturday 30th January. Sligo cellist, Anna Houston, with an expanding international reputation as member of No Crows, will share the honours with one of her very talented cello pupils, Moya Gorman (who will play the solo part in the first movement).
The programme’s two other soloists will appear in Scarlatti’s sinfonia in D Major. Lucie O’Hara plays recorder, joining Hungarian trumpeter Endre Borsos. A sprightly symphony by English 18th century composer William Boyce and a concerto by Vivaldi complete the programme.
Sligo Baroque Orchestra performs in the Methodist Church, Wine Street, Sligo on Saturday January 30th at 8 pm. Admission: adults €8; students free.
