Sligo Artists in Floating World Exhibition, Belfast

University Gallery, York Street, Belfast until 17th November.

Founded in 2004 by Andy Parsons and Glenn Holman, Floating World is a collective entity which includes artists from Ireland, the U Kand Japan. The current Floating World artists are Andy Parsons, Elizabeth Kinsella, Sligo, Republic of Ireland; Edwin Aitken, Glynis Candler, Simon Burton, Sarah Carne, Glenn Holman, London, England; Diane Henshaw, Northern Ireland and Hidehiko Ishibashi, Tokyo, Japan.

The geographical spread of the Floating World membership has prompted the development of a genuinely international outlook, and the idea of collaboration and the sharing of expertise and ideas is central to the collectives' ethos.

Floating World’s initial purpose was to introduce and represent artists new to the medium of artist’s books, and books by members are in a number of public and private collections, including The Tate Gallery, The British Museum and the British Library.

Currently Floating World is exploring the idea of using Artists books to create collaborative works with members of the public, and developing new ways of making and showing them so that they reach the widest possible audience.  An example is the 'BookHouse' project in Cavan, where a derelict house in the town centre was renovated and turned into a temporary publishing house for the public to come in and make their own books.

Each of their exhibitions is accompanied by a varied programme of workshops which are designed to give away as much information and expertise as possible, to facilitate more people exploring the medium.

Floating World has exhibited nationally and internationally, including London, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Dublin; and have shown in a wide variety of different venues, from the foyer of Enniskillen Town Hal lto Tate Britain.
