Urban Public Space Workshops in Sligo Town

Artist Bart Lodewijks

The Model announces two workshops by the renowned and unique Dutch artist, Bart Lodewijks.

These workshops will form part of Barts Artist-in-Residence at the Model and will be a great opportunity to gain an insight into his fascinating style of urban chalk drawing. Bart searches for houses, interiors and even street surfaces to use as canvas for drawing with blackboard chalk. Chalk is an innocent material, thus the drawings form no threat: they can permeate easier into a social levels and context than a more permanent material. Bart describes the workshops as a chance for participants to draw naked:

I don’t mean without clothes, or nude models. Instead we will start from scratch, trying to find basic drawing material like gathering wood for a fire. We are going to draw in the public space and see what becomes relevant.

Bart Lodewijks is notorious for his public art projects in cities and towns through out Europe and South America, projects lasting as long 6 months in cities such as Rio de Janeiro.  This October, he commences a three-year public art project in Sligo and its surroundings. Simply using chalk and a ladder he will navigate his way throughout the city, creating a linear web of beautiful intricate drawings.

For those of you interested in viewing his work you can check out his book ‘Unforgettable Neighborhood’ or visit his website at www.bartlodewijks.nl/

Workshops will commence on Sunday 14 October 12pm – 2pm and Sunday 21 October at 12pm – 2pm. €40 per workshop.

Booking is at www.themodel.ie/education or alternatively on (071) 914 1405.
