The Poetry of Craft Exhibition

Yeats Building, Hyde Bridge, Sligo

Opening 6pm Monday 25th July

Until Monday 8th August

William Butler Yeats is recognised as one of the greatest poets of the English language. His works are closely connected with Sligo County, the culture and landscape, which influenced him greatly during his formative years. This influence is evident throughout his career, providing a wealth of imagery, myth and folklore to his works which conjure images and references to Sligo and the surrounding region.

Hence, in this designated Year of Craft 2011  it is fitting for the Made in Sligo collective of craftspeople to honour this connection in their first group exhibition  - The Poetry of Craft.

Running from Monday 25th July to Monday 8th August in the Yeats Building, Hyde Bridge, Sligo, each Made in Sligo craft maker has originated compelling dimensional art inspired by one of three specific Yeat’s poems ..... ‘He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven’; ‘To A Child Dancing In The Wind’ and ‘A Coat’.

What has resulted is a stunning collection of local creativity and artist interpretation inspired by William Butler Yeats.   The exhibition is held in conjunction with the Yeats International Summer School.

The Made in Sligo project brings together a network of gifted and quality assessed craft workers working in Co. Sligo who have come together to promote the very best quality of Sligo design and craft products. It involves 12 creative entrepreneurs and has the strong backing of the local development agencies.

The Poetry of Craft exhibition will be opened by Professor James Pethica, Director of the 2011 Yeats International Summer School at 6.00pm on Monday 25th July in the Yeats Building, Hyde Bridge, Sligo.  Born in England and educated at Oxford, James teaches at Williams College in Massachusetts. He has published widely on Yeats and Irish literature, and is currently at work on the authorized biography of Lady Gregory.
