Sligo Drama Circle Young People’s Theatre has been running since January 2005. It was created to run in tandem with the Sligo Drama Circle, an amateur drama society in Sligo town. Its purpose, as set out in the original proposal was:
-
To promote theatre and drama with young people in the Sligo area
-
To give young people a creative voice
-
To develop contacts between young people and the Sligo Drama Circle
Sligo Drama Circle Young People’s Theatre is for 15 -21 year olds and meets on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm – 9.30pm in the Drama Circle’s rehearsal space in Market Yard, Sligo (beside Montmartre Restaurant). No fee required.
Their first public production was in December 2005 called “Ed and the Hat” an improvised drama based on Macbeth. This was followed by “In Just Spring”, April 2006, a production exploring character using masks, “You are Here (But Who Are You?)” in December 2006, and “Inside Out” in April 2007. All these productions were devised by the young people fulfilling their aim to give young people a creative voice. In April 20008 they performed their first scripted play – it was “The Children” by Edward Bond written for a cast of young people but with the majority of the scenes improvised according to instructions from the playwright. It was an exciting piece and highly successful and challenged both the young people themselves and the audiences who came.
