Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith’s talk takes the relationships between place and language, mapping and naming, topography and toponymy, so characteristic of Irish culture through the ages, as a point of departure from which to explore the various roles played by language in the contemporary visual arts, both in Ireland and elsewhere.

Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith is a critic, curator and Senior Lecturer in Modern Irish at University College Dublin. He is a contributor to Artforum, Frieze, Parkett, Tate etc. and has published over a hundred monographic essays.  Recent publications include catalogue essays on Martin Boyce, Thomas Demand, Annette Kelm, Karen Kilimnik, Susan Philipsz and Thomas Scheibitz.  He has curated exhibitions in Dublin, London, Amsterdam and New York.
