The Fred Conlon Contemporary Sculpture Award

This award was established by Sligo County Council under the Space for Art Sligo Arts Plan 2007-2012 to honour the late sculptor Fred Conlon, a native of west Sligo. Fred Conlon supported generations of young artists in his life and work and this award pays tribute to his contribution to the cultural life of the region. An initiative of Sligo Arts Service, the award is delivered in partnership with the Conlon Family and the Leitrim Sculpture Centre.   The residency is for visual artists, particularly sculptors, who wish to advance their work or create a new body of work.

The award offers the opportunity to avail of studio and living facilities for two months in the inspiring scenic region of Easkey, West Sligo http://www.daft.ie/searchshortterm.daft?id=10588 and one month in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre followed by a solo exhibition in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre upon completion of the residency. Dates of the residency are fixed between mid January and mid April 2011.

Cró na gCearc, the Fred Conlon Residential Studio, provides a progressive artist space set in the rural farmland of County Sligo, 1 mile from the village of Easkey. The detached, modern studio is in converted outbuildings on the grounds of the residence, a well furnished, comfortable house. The ground floor spacious studio comprises of approximately 600 sq. foot open plan studio. Natural light, hot water, heating, wash room and utility area.  The art-making process is the highest priority at the Fred Conlon Studio where both atmosphere and environment offer ideal situations for creative growth and experimentation.

Located in the small town of Manorhamilton, North County Leitrim, the Leitrim Sculpture Centre supports innovation and understanding in contemporary art by facilitating artists wishing to extend their practice or knowledge.  LSC will provide a studio and accommodation for one month followed by a solo exhibition in the Centre upon completion of the residency.  All facilities, space and equipment are available for use by the artist across the 8 main resources of the LSC. www.leitrimsculpturecentre.ie

Open to national and international artists, at different stages of their career, applicants will be required to have a third level qualification in art or an equivalent record of application and achievement.
 

The Fred Conlon Residential Studio Bursary Award 2010 Guidelines

Criteria
• Applicants must have a third level qualification in art or an equivalent record of application and achievement
• Quality of the proposal presented i.e. that the proposal is effectively planned with clear aims and objectives together with creative, imaginative ideas;
• That the artist can demonstrate scale and standard of finished artwork;
• The artist must demonstrate effectively how this bursary will support their practice at this time.
• The successful artist must be available to avail of the residency between mid January and mid April 2011.

Assessment Procedures
• Applications must be emailed to Sligo Arts Service, Sligo County Council. Email: rmcgrath@sligococo.ie.
• Sligo County Council Arts Service will consider all applications from visual artists, particularly sculptors.
• If an applicant is ineligible Sligo County Council Arts Service will return it to the applicant and advise accordingly.
• Applications will be reviewed by an expert panel. It is important that you provide full information in your application, as the panel may not be aware of your work. Decisions will be communicated before end of August 2010.
