Rekindle your love for music with Sligo Community Adult Orchestra

Hawk’s Well Theatre and the Sligo Academy of Music are joining together to create the Sligo Community Adult Orchestra. This fun initiative invites anyone aged 18 or over who plays music today or who played an instrument years ago, but hasn’t had a chance to take it out of its case in years, to join this exciting new collaborative project.

The first season of rehearsals will run from September, culminating in a performance on the Hawk’s Well stage on Sunday 2 December 2018 as part of the spectacular Sligo Pops; A Night at the Movies event. Orchestra rehearsals will take place on Sunday 16 September, Sunday 21 October and Sunday 11 November from 11am to 1pm each day. This initiative is free of charge for participants.

The community orchestra will be led by conductor Niamh Crowley, founder and director of Sligo Academy of Music. Niamh is a native of Rosses Point. She began her musical training at the age of four and attended the Royal Irish Academy of Music for eleven years. She continued her studies at the Royal College of Music, London. Niamh conducts the Sligo Academy of Music Junior and Sinfonietta orchestras who she has brought to perform in the National Concert Hall and on tour throughout Europe. She has toured extensively with the European Union Youth Orchestra and has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Sligo Community Orchestra is a great opportunity for players of all aptitudes to develop in confidence as musicians, and will give participants an opportunity to learn new skills and to gain experience working as part of an ensemble. Participants will be given the chance to put existing, new and renewed skills into practice in a friendly and relaxed environment. The music chosen will give scope to players of all abilities – there will be a part for everyone!

Sligo Community Orchestra has been made possible by support from Sligo Academy of Music, Hawk’s Well Theatre, Creative Ireland Sligo and Sligo County Council.
